Wessex
Wessex is a naturally beautiful area in the prosperous south of England, with major population centres in Southampton, Portsmouth, Bournemouth and Poole along the south coast.
The Wessex Deanery is responsible for the management of postgraduate medical and dental education across Hampshire, Dorset, South Wiltshire, the Isle of Wight and the States of Jersey (see map).
Wessex Deanery is renowned for its excellent training, and the support it provides for both its trainees and its educators and in the field, and has strong links with the University of Southampton School of Medicine, the University of Winchester, Portsmouth and Bournemouth Universities, as well as with the hospitals and GP practices within its patch. We also work closely with Oxford Deanery, our sister deanery within NESC, and other deaneries nationally.
The regional teaching hospital is Southampton General Hospital; other hospitals involved in the rotation are located in Basingstoke, Bournemouth, Dorchester, Isle of Wight, Poole, Portsmouth, Salisbury, Southampton and Winchester.
The consultants throughout the region are enthusiastic trainers. There is also an active regional postgraduate teaching programme, and local journal clubs are strongly encouraged. Opportunities to undertake research and audit projects are available in all hospitals.
